Motivating Children to Achieve

The amount of achievement motivation that children growing up in the past few years have is quite low compared to other generations. Kids often seem to expect everything to be done for them and often have little motivation to do something on their own for an extended period of time, which doesn't involve video games or television of course. The main reason for this situation is the tendency for parents to do everything for their children, rather than motivating children to achieve, and thereby depriving them of the chance to develop self-reliance skills.

This lack of motivation to achieve certain things has mainly been created by parents being enablers and causing negative reinforcement with poor parenting techniques. The end result is a high number of kids who seriously lack the motivation to succeed and to work hard at developing themselves. The message that these children have been given is that they are very special and shouldn't have to do anything they don't want to do, and that others are solely responsible for their well-being.

This is a serious problem and parents should be actively looking to raise their children's achievement motivation. One way to develop these motivation skills is by forcing children to do more for themselves. This doesn't mean throwing them into the deep end and expecting results; it means taking steps to train your child at a particular skill, whether it be tying shoelaces or studying for a test, and letting them do it themselves for the most part.

Another way of motivating children to achieve specific goals is by giving out rewards, yet it is equally important to only give out a reward when a particular task has been accomplished. That way you don't increase motivation to get prizes, but rather to accomplish something and feel good about the effort put forth. It is imperative that you never give a reward when there was a promise that wasn't met. This will only teach your child that your word is no good and that mediocrity is acceptable.

The key to raising well behaved and secure kids is to focus on motivating children. Children who have been taught from a young age to enjoy learning new skills and to feel good about finishing a task or helping their parents do household chores will have self motivation skills that will carry them further in life than those who had everything given to them without having to achieve anything on their own.
